Be Authentic

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the ProBlogger Training Event down in Melbourne. Highlights included finally meeting some beautiful faces in person that I had come to know online over the years, and of course I came back to Sydney with a swag of handy blogging tips under my belt… But the single handed most important affirmation I brought back on the plane ride home was simply – Be Authentic.

I’ve thought about this a lot over the past few days. Be Authentic. It sounds simple enough, but in reality, and even more so in the blogging world, authenticity can slip away from you. When you’re trying to engage readers, build your social media pages, and provide fresh new content every week – sometimes just making it through to Friday is an achievement. There’s often not much spare time to think about how authentic you’re being.

Which makes me so proud when I think of the wonderful little community we have here at Pretty Fluffy. This site has been such a blessing in my life and I have all of you to thank for it. You see, this site is the one true place I am 100% authentic. What you see is what you get. I don’t apologise for being crazy about dogs. I’ll shout it from the rooftops if I see there’s a way to help them. I’ll literally talk your ears off about a celebrity’s new dog. Or I’ll spend half an hour giggling over a cute photo you emailed me. Here I don’t have to be the perfect wife, friend, or employee.

I just get to be me.

So this week, I say to you Pretty Fluffies – Be Authentic. Be true to yourself. Don’t hide parts of your personality for fear of what others might say or do. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Stop comparing yourself to others. Listen to what makes your heart sing. Don’t be afraid to say no. Take a rest when you need it. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Don’t let anyone ever dull your sparkle.

Just be you. Because you know what? You’re awesome.

And just for fun… Some lovely ladies from the PB Event being their authentic selves! (Image from Smilebooth)

  1. Well said! and YOU are awesome. Love the ‘stache on you and Rach! Beauties 🙂

  2. Lovely lovely words here. I totally agree. And not just for readers, but for ourselves. Pretending to be someone we’re not is just a waste of time, money and energy. And in being authentic our blogs draw towards us people we can truly connect with. That’s one of my favourite things about blogging. I’ve made friends for life. P.S. I am an unashamed, self-proclaimed DOG MUM! And here in your bloggy home I know that there is no judgement of that 🙂

  3. I love this post so much <3 I hope I can live (write) by these words. Thanks for being so inspiring.

  4. I love so much that you have written about this – authenticity is key and so often the first thing to be compromised when trying to be a good partner, friend, employee, the list goes on!

Everything you have created here is incredible and having had the pleasure of catching up with you offline I can genuinely say you too lovely lady are truly awesome! xx

  5. Hi Serena,
As you know I don’t have a dog (or any other pet for that matter) but my husband and I both can’t wait till we leave our apartment for a house so that we can have a dog and take him/her for walks (and for me to buy him/her pretty collars lol). Anyway, despite my petless life at the moment, I love coming to your blog for the precise reason behind this post: it is so authentic! It’s also pretty and visually inspiring, and everything about it is so fresh. But you’re right, and that’s part of the reason I stopped blogging at my old host and started on my own domain, because everything is just my perspective, that I get to rant about what I have bought or what tea cup I am obsessed with or what I am experimenting with for dinner, and I love that more than thinking about what I should be blogging about or what is going to get me readers. For the first time in my life, I am blogging for myself and I love it, and there’s nothing more authentic than that.

    • Thank you so much for your lovely, lovely comment Sarah. I love your writing and approach to blogging.

I always find new blogs that I instantly fall for – some have beautifully designed layouts, others a fresh new take on a trend…but the ones that I come back to time and time again are the blogs that are real and I feel a connection with the person behind the screen. Maybe they love dogs, writing, Paris…whatever it is, it’s them that keeps me coming back.

Thanks again for your beautiful words xx
