Dog Collars, Leads & Dog Harnesses

A collar and lead are the two things a dog wears every day, so they are worth buying properly. The makers below cover leather and biothane collars, harnesses, long lines, matching sets, and the hardware that holds all of it together.

Fit and hardware

  • Two fingers should slide comfortably under a fastened collar: snug enough not to pull over the ears, loose enough not to press. Re-check it on a growing puppy every few weeks.
  • A harness is the kinder choice for a dog who pulls, and for flat-faced breeds and small dogs with delicate windpipes. Front-clip styles give you more steering.
  • The hardware is what fails first. Welded or solid rings and a clip you cannot twist open matter more than the colour of the webbing.
  • Keep an ID tag on the everyday collar even if your dog is microchipped, and add something reflective or a light if you walk in the dark.

Everyday collar, walking harness

Most households end up with both: a light collar that lives on the dog and carries the ID, and a harness that goes on for walks. A long line for recall practice in a safe open space is the third thing worth owning, and the one most people wish they had bought sooner.
