Gathering the names…

The method

How it works

  1. 1

    Meet your dog

Boy or girl, coat colour, size, breed and a few personality sliders. A black Shiba and a golden Lab get very different lists.

  2. 2

    Tell us what you love

Food, myth, music, fashion, Canadiana, bad puns. Pick up to five worlds your dog’s name should come from.

  3. 3

    Swipe a few names

Heart the ones you like, skip the rest. We learn your taste as you go and rank every name against it.

FAQ

Choosing a dog name: your questions

1

How do I choose a name for my dog?

Say it out loud the way you will really use it: across a park, at the vet, at six in the morning. Aim for one or two syllables and a crisp first sound, and steer clear of anything that sounds like a command you use.

Then live with a shortlist for a few days. The name that still makes you smile on day three is usually the one. If you want more to choose from, start with our big list of dog names or browse all our dog name lists.

2

How long does it take a dog to learn its name?

Most dogs start responding within a few days of steady, rewarded use, and a reliable response often takes a couple of weeks. Say the name cheerfully, follow it with a treat or a game, and never use it to scold. A name that predicts bad news is one a dog learns to ignore.

3

Should I avoid names that sound like commands?

Yes, it is worth the care. Kit hides “sit”, Beau hides “no”, and Jake rhymes with “shake”, so the dog cannot tell whether you are calling or cueing. The generator hides the closest lookalikes by default, and you can switch them back on in the results.

4

Do short names really work better?

One or two syllables are easier to say sharply and easier for a dog to pick out of everyday chatter, which is why trainers usually suggest them. A longer name still works if you are happy to shorten it day to day, like Bartholomew to Barty.

5

Can I rename a rescue dog?

Yes. A dog learns a new name the way it learns any cue: repetition and reward. Many adopters keep a similar sound to ease the switch, like Bella to Stella. Some people prefer a clean break for a dog with a hard past, and that works too.

6

Is it okay to give a dog a human name?

Plenty of people do. Walter, Dorothy and Frank are all having a moment. Just think about the awkward moments: a dog with the same name as your child, your coworker or the neighbour. Add those names under “Names to steer clear of” in step two and the generator will hide them, along with anything that sounds too close.

7

How do I avoid a name every other dog has?

Bella, Luna, Max, Charlie and Cooper turn up on popularity lists year after year. Pick “Stand out at the park” in step two and the generator leans toward rarer names, and every result is labelled from very popular to rare find. For themed ideas, try our funny, anime and nature dog name lists.
