Kosar is the editor of Pretty Fluffy, a lifelong dog lover, and the proud mom of Yuki, a Maltese who has very high standards. So does Kosar. She researches everything obsessively before it ever makes it onto the page.

My Maltese is called Yuki, and I would love to tell you I agonized over the perfect anime dog names for weeks. The truth is I watched her tumble out of the crate looking like a small snowdrift, remembered that yuki means snow in Japanese, and that was that. It also happens to be a name that turns up across half the anime I grew up on, which I only realized later and have been quietly smug about ever since.

That is usually how it goes. The name that sticks is the one that fits the dog in front of you and happens to come from a world you already love. Below are 200 ideas, sorted so you can go straight to the kind you are after.

How to Choose an Anime Name for Your Dog

The best anime dog names are short, easy to call across a park, and connected to a series you will still love in five years. Names of one or two syllables work best, since dogs pick them up faster than longer ones. Names that sound like common cues are worth avoiding, so a dog called Nao will struggle when you say no, and Sit-adjacent sounds cause the same confusion. If you love a longer name like Sesshomaru, choose the everyday shortening first and make sure you are happy calling that.

A few other things worth thinking about before you commit:

  • Say it out loud in the voice you use at the dog park. If it makes you wince, keep looking.
  • Hard consonants like K and T cut through background noise better than soft ones.
  • Check what it sounds like shouted, not just whispered during cuddles.
  • If you are picking from a series you started last week, give it a month before deciding.
