Fall dog names have one problem the other seasonal lists do not, which is that everybody reaches for the same four. Maple, Pumpkin, Ember and Autumn are lovely, and you will meet all four at the park before October is out.
So this list goes wider. Cozy names, harvest names, October and November names, and a set of proper autumn words for readers whose fall happens in March. Here are 120 of our favorites, with the spooky ones left where they belong.
The best fall dog names are warm, short and tied to something specific about the season rather than the season in general. Maple, Hazel, Rusty, Amber and Cider are the ones most people land on. Conker, Persimmon, Bramley and Quince are the ones you will rarely hear twice. One or two syllables carry furthest across a windy park, and a name you can still say cheerfully in July beats one that only works in October.
Fall Names for Girl Dogs
The warm end of the color wheel does most of the work here, and several suit a red, cream or golden coat so neatly that the name looks deliberate rather than seasonal.

One note on Nutmeg, a lovely name attached to a spice that should stay well away from the dog wearing it. Nutmeg contains myristicin, which causes disorientation and a racing heart in dogs, and our guide to herbs and spices for dogs puts it firmly on the skip list.
Fall Names for Boy Dogs
Trees, grain and old orchard varieties are where the good boy names live. Most are one or two syllables, which is what you want when the wind picks up and you are calling across a field.

Once the name is settled, the rest of that first fortnight is logistics, and our new puppy checklist covers what to have ready. Order the tag early, since a fall puppy arrives at the same time as everybody else's holiday post.
Cozy Fall Themed Dog Names
Fall is not only leaves. It is the first night the heating goes on, and the blanket that migrates from the cupboard to the sofa and never returns. These fall themed dog names come from that half of the season.

If the name is going to be Flannel, the collar may as well match. Our fall dog collars cover the plaid end of the wardrobe and the fall dog harnesses handle the rest.

Autumn Dog Names

Autumn and fall are one season with two vocabularies, and the autumn words are quieter, older and far less used on dogs. If you grew up calling it autumn, start here.
- Conker: the horse chestnut of a British playground, and a joy to shout.
- Sloe: the hedgerow berry picked after the first frost.
- Damson: a small dark plum, softer to say than it looks.
- Bracken: the fern that turns a hillside rust-orange.
- Bilberry: the wild blueberry. Billie for short.
- Rook: the bird of bare trees, and one syllable that carries.
- Mist: for a gray coat and early starts.
- Elder: the hedgerow tree behind elderflower and elderberry.
- Haw: short for hawthorn, and short is the point.
- Fallow: a rested field and a soft fawn color at once.
- Hazelnut: Hazel for a dog who earns the extra syllable.
- Copse: a small stand of trees, and a clipped little name.
- Bronze: the exact color of a wet oak leaf.
- Drizzle: honest about what autumn is actually like.
Autumn Names for Pets Below the Equator
Worth saying plainly, because no other list on this topic does. For our Australian and New Zealand readers autumn runs March to May, so a puppy who arrives in the season is a March dog rather than an October one. Everything above still works, with two adjustments. Halloween has no hold on the calendar, so the harvest and hedgerow names come without the pumpkin association. And Conker, Sloe, Bilberry and Haw are Northern Hemisphere plants, so they read as pretty sounds rather than as anything growing outside.
October and November Dog Names
Names tied to the months themselves, both birthstones included, for a dog whose arrival date is the whole story.
- October: long, but it shortens to Toby or Obie.
- November: the same trick, arriving at Novi or Ember.
- Novi: the short version on its own, and the easiest to call.
- Opal: the October birthstone, lovely on a pale or merle coat.
- Topaz: the November birthstone, warm gold and faintly regal.
- Libra: for late September and early October arrivals.
- Scorpio: for the rest of October and early November.
- Guy: a nod to November 5th, and very funny on a serious dog.
- Poppy: for Remembrance Day on the 11th, which lands differently than it does as a flower name.
- Frost: for the first cold morning of the year.
- Equinox: the day the season turns. Nox for short.
- Aki: Japanese for autumn, and the shortest name here.
You will notice nothing spooky on this page, which is deliberate. Ghost, Boo, Casper, Raven and the other 259 of them live on our list of Halloween dog names, which is where to go if you want the season at full volume. Pumpkin is the one crossover, on the grounds that it is a vegetable before it is a lantern. If the costume is the real project, our Halloween dog costumes are a better use of an afternoon.
Names That Still Work in July
This is the one risk a seasonal name carries. Fall lasts three months and your dog lasts fifteen years, so the name has to survive nine months a year of being out of season.
The test is simple. Say it out loud on a hot afternoon and see whether it still sounds like a dog rather than a decoration. Maple, Hazel, Rusty, Cider, Rowan and Ash pass easily, because they were words before they were seasonal. Gravy and Pumpernickel will make you laugh every summer, which is a different kind of passing. Gourd does not pass, and neither does Bushel unless you commit fully. After that the usual rules apply: check it against your commands, since a dog who hears Bo and no as one sound will hesitate on both.
If none of these are right, our full list of dog names runs to 500 across every theme, and the newly published flower names for dogs is the natural companion piece for anyone who prefers spring.
