Granite Cottage is a heritage stone cottage in Beechworth, Victoria, where dogs are welcome inside. It sits on two acres with a fully fenced yard and an insulated kennel on the covered back porch, a short walk from the town center and a few steps from the Beechworth Gorge. Two queen bedrooms sleep four guests, and a one-off pet fee applies to stays with dogs.
Location Near Beechworth Town Center
Located on a quiet, semi-rural street just a short walk (or a three-minute drive) from the middle of town, Granite Cottage offers the serene setting we were hoping for, without sacrificing any conveniences. While we love our tree change escapes, there's no denying we are city girls at heart! Being so close means the bakeries, breweries, boutique stores and beautiful heritage landmarks are all basically on your doorstep.

Beechworth Gorge Walk With Dogs
Granite Cottage is also a mere 300 m stroll from the popular Beechworth Gorge, and you and your pup simply can't miss the scenic walking trails that snake through Victoria's historic goldfields. Dogs on lead are welcome along most of the route, and exploring the Gorge with the boys was a highlight of our trip!
Start at the historic Powder Magazine for a relaxed there-and-back stroll to the Cascades, roughly 1.2 km return. The Spring Creek Bridge has been closed, which prevents the full loop, so check current conditions at the visitor information center before setting out. Bring water and a spare lead, and let our dog packing list take care of the rest.

When holidaying with our dogs, we always look for pet-friendly accommodation with unique or stylish features, because we don't believe we should have to sacrifice luxury or comfort simply because our dependents happen to be furry. Luckily for us, the owners of Granite Cottage agree. Built in 1860, it has all the gorgeous heritage features you would want in a gold rush-era town like Beechworth.
Heritage Cottage Living Rooms and Fireplace
Step through the front door and you're greeted by a cozy fireplace and lounge area, one of two separate living spaces, with a large smart TV and a huge selection of streaming platforms. It was the perfect setting for snuggling with the boys on the chilly evenings, and we definitely made great use of this space! Ducted heating and cooling take care of every other season.
Bedrooms, Loft and Stairs for Dogs
Granite Cottage has an interesting split-level layout, with one queen bedroom on the ground floor and the other in the loft. We took the ground floor room simply because Sunny isn't great with running up and down stairs, so this is something to consider if your pup is a little shy of them too. We were very happy with our choice: the queen bed was super cozy and comfortable, and there was plenty of space for the four of us, including both Ziggy and Sunny's dog beds!
The loft is one of the many unique features of the property we loved, with its A-frame timber ceiling and beams and, of course, the granite throughout. Jutting out from the loft bedroom is a cozy office space with a stand-up desk and a handy reading light. In the afternoons this little nook catches the light beautifully, and Sunny definitely wasn't sad about it when we plonked him down for a nap. Expect a few internal steps and low ceiling beams, thanks to the age of the building.
Holiday Cottage Kitchen and Garden Outlook
The kitchen and bathroom offer the same blend of charm and modern amenities, right down to the spa bath. We certainly made use of the Breville Oracle coffee machine, and the locally produced beans by micro-roaster Coffee Chakra were to die for. We highly recommend picking up a bag from their Myrtleford cafe!
The dishwasher, large fridge and freezer and spacious layout made food prep for us and the boys nice and easy. We also loved the outlook to the lush, woodland-like garden, complete with outdoor seating, a bamboo bush and a lemon tree, which you're welcome to pick from!

The outdoor area has a covered back porch with an insulated kennel and comfy seating, plus three outdoor dining areas. As we don't have a big yard of our own, it was a real treat letting the boys off lead to sniff and explore the garden, safe in the knowledge the property is secure and fully fenced.

Dog Walks and the Off-Leash Park
Beyond the Gorge, the 2 km loop around Lake Sambell makes an easy morning or afternoon stroll. Dogs are welcome on lead throughout the town's parks and gardens and in the Beechworth Historic Park. The only designated off-leash area is Baarmutha Park, and dogs are not permitted in national parks, including Woolshed Falls.
