Before You Start The Puppy Photoshoot
Before trying these puppy photoshoot ideas, take a few minutes to set up a calm, safe space for your pup. The best puppy photos usually happen when your puppy feels relaxed, comfortable and free to be their cute little self.
Choose a time when your puppy is naturally sleepy or settled, such as after a walk, play session or meal. Soft natural light works best, so try photographing near a window or outside in open shade rather than using harsh flash.
Keep a few treats, a favourite toy or a squeaky sound nearby to gently get your puppy’s attention. Get down to their eye level for sweet, natural portraits, and use simple blankets, baskets or backgrounds so your puppy stays the focus.
Most importantly, keep every pose safe and supported. For basket, hammock or swaddle photos, make sure your puppy is low to the ground, comfortable and never left unattended. Keep the session short, take breaks often, and let your puppy lead the way.

#1. Puppy in a hammock

Anne Geddes, the original queen of newborn photography, became famous with her iconic images of babies sleeping in hammocks. And if a baby looks cute in a hammock, of course a puppy does too!
Just remember, safety first – this photo was taken above a bed, which is just out of shot.
#2. Puppy in a swaddle

Newborn photography 101 – but for puppies! For this puppy photo idea, grab your favourite light throw blanket and wrap it round your puppy so they are nice and snuggly.
Lay their ears out, or tuck their paws under their chin, for that extra adorbs factor.
#3. Puppy in bed

Hands down the easiest time to photograph your puppy is when they’re asleep, which is 90% of the time – puppies sleep a lot!
For this shot, tuck your sleeping puppy in bed nice and snug, with their paws over the sheet for extra cuteness.
#4. Puppy’s first run in the garden

The unbridled joy your puppy feels when they are let loose to run around your garden for the first time is a precious memory you will 100% want to capture.
Puppy photoshoot tip: Get down to your puppy’s level to capture the moment from their perspective!
#5.Puppy hanging in a swaddle

Sure, a hammock is cute. But when it comes to adorable puppy pictures, a hanging swaddle is even sweeter.
Again, safety first – this photo was taken just above a bed, because you never know when your sleeping puppy is going to wake up suddenly and want something!
#6. Puppy announcement idea

Need cute puppy announcement ideas? Sharing your exciting news with the world via a sweet or funny message on a letterboard is all the rage across Facebook and Instagram, for good reason.
It’s also one of the easiest puppy picture ideas to try at home, especially if you want a photo that feels personal and fun.
#7. Puppy with flower crown

Just when you think a sleeping puppy can’t look any more innocent…out come the flower crowns!
Not that we used an actual flower crown, that is – these are just a few flowers from our garden resting gently on Sunny’s head. The effect is the same – blooming adorable.
#8. Puppy in a basket

Another idea inspired by classic newborn photography, the ‘puppy in a basket’ shot is a must!
If you have a wicker basket, simply pad it out with one or two light throws — we opted for one plain, one patterned throw — then tuck your sleeping puppy in while laying on their back, so you can get the shot from directly above.
#9. Paws on paws

Little paw paws touching their little toe beans…puppy photos don’t get much cuter.
Make a nest with a blanket and place your sleepy puppy inside, laying on their back.
Make your puppy nice and tight and snug, which will bring their four paws close together so they are touching – then snap away!
#10. Puppy’s little details

Does your pup have adorable little features you love?
Such as their puppy paws, eyelashes or floppy ears?
Capture all the little things you love and put them together in a cute puppy photo collage. It’s one of the sweetest puppy photo ideas for remembering just how tiny they once were.
FAQ
How do you do a puppy photoshoot at home?
To do a puppy photoshoot at home, choose a quiet spot with soft natural light, set up a simple blanket, bed or basket, and keep treats or a favourite toy nearby. Start with sleepy, relaxed photos first, then try playful shots once your puppy is awake and curious.
What are some easy puppy picture ideas?
Some easy puppy picture ideas include your puppy sleeping in bed, wrapped in a soft swaddle, sitting in a basket, playing in the garden, wearing a simple flower crown, or posing beside a puppy announcement letterboard.
What is the best age for puppy pictures?
The best age for puppy photos is usually during the first few weeks after bringing your puppy home. Puppies grow quickly, so this is a lovely time to capture their tiny paws, soft fur, floppy ears and sleepy expressions.
What props work best for puppy photos?
Soft blankets, baskets, small beds, letterboards, flower crowns, bandanas and favourite toys all work well for puppy photos. Choose props that are comfortable, safe and simple enough to keep the attention on your puppy.
How do I get my puppy to sit still for photos?
Keep the session short, use treats or toys to get their attention, and take lots of quick photos instead of waiting for one perfect pose. Try photographing your puppy when they are sleepy, or ask someone to stand near you and gently hold their focus.
Are puppy swaddle, basket or hammock photos safe?
These puppy photoshoot ideas can be safe when done carefully. Keep your puppy low to the ground, fully supported and close to a soft surface. Never hang, balance or place your puppy anywhere unstable, and never leave them unattended during a pose.
What should my puppy wear for a photoshoot?
Your puppy does not need to wear much for a photoshoot. A simple bandana, bow, flower crown or soft collar can look cute without distracting from their face. Make sure anything they wear is comfortable, lightweight and removed if they seem bothered.
