Dyson Groom Tool Review for Dogs

Happy Border Collie being groomed with the Dyson Groom tool attachment.Dog Product Reviews

Brushing a heavy shedder usually happens twice: once on the dog, and again on the rug, the sofa and your jeans. The Dyson Groom Tool promises to do both jobs in one pass, pulling loose hair out of the coat and straight into the vacuum. It works beautifully on the right dog, and even a vacuum-shy one can learn to accept it with patience. This review covers who it suits, which Dyson it fits, and exactly how to introduce it.

Dyson Pet Grooming Kit Verdict in Brief

The Dyson Groom Tool is a slicker-style dog brush that attaches to a Dyson vacuum, so loose hair, dander and skin flakes go into the bin instead of onto your floor. It works very well on adult dogs with medium to long coats who are relaxed around a vacuum. It is not designed for woolly coats such as Poodles or Bichons, and it adds little for short-haired dogs. Nervous dogs can still get there, but only with slow, treat-heavy practice.

If shedding season leaves tumbleweeds of fur in every corner, these cleaning tips for dog owners pair nicely with a tool like this.

Groom Tool or Pet Grooming Kit: Which Fits Your Dyson

The Dyson pet attachment comes in two versions, and the right one depends on your vacuum. The original Groom Tool is made for Dyson's corded, plug-in machines. For the cordless stick range, Dyson packages its Pet groom tool as the Pet Grooming Kit, which adds a quick-release adaptor and an extension hose of just over three feet so the brush can reach your dog while the vacuum stays put.

The kit fits most cordless models from the V7 onward, including the V8, V10, V11, V12, V15, Outsize and Gen5 ranges. Dyson updates its compatibility list as new machines launch, so check your exact model before buying. If you are still choosing the vacuum itself, this Dyson V11 review for pet hair covers how one of the most popular models handles a shedding household.

For homes without a Dyson, universal vacuum grooming kits do a similar job, and this oneisall pet grooming kit review looks at one that works with most vacuums.

Which Dogs the Dyson Pet Hair Attachment Suits

Dyson is refreshingly clear about who this is for. Its own checklist says your dog should be an adult with a medium or long coat, already comfortable with a slicker brush, and not disturbed by the vacuum, and it suggests having a second person to help. If you are unsure, it recommends asking your vet or groomer first.

Coats It Handles Best

Double-coated and long-haired breeds get the most from it: Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Samoyeds, Shelties and similar heavy shedders. On these coats the wide brush head covers a lot of ground quickly, and the difference in floating hair and fluff on the floor is obvious after the first session.

Dogs It Is Not Designed For

Skip it for woolly coats like Poodles, Bichon Frises and Pulis, which need different tools altogether, and for short, smooth coats that a rubber grooming mitt handles better. Puppies are excluded too. For those dogs, the dog grooming directory is a better place to find the right brush.

How the Dyson Dog Brush Works

The brush head carries 364 fine slicker bristles, angled at 35 degrees, that flex upright as you brush so they reach into the coat and catch loose hair. You hold the bristles out with your thumb while you groom. Release your thumb and the bristles retract, and the vacuum pulls the collected hair off the brush and into the bin, so the head cleans itself.

You do not have to run the vacuum the whole time. The brush works as an ordinary slicker brush with the power off, and you can switch on only to clear it. That flexibility is exactly what makes it workable for dogs who are unsure about the noise.

Using a Dyson Pet Grooming Tool With a Vacuum-Shy Dog

Pretty Fluffy's original hands-on test of the Dyson Groom Tool used a dog who was genuinely frightened of vacuums, the kind who leaves the room the moment one comes out of the cupboard. Over four weeks of short, positive sessions, she went from bolting to sitting calmly for about five minutes of brushing with the vacuum running. This is the plan that got her there.

  1. Week one: brush with the head detached from the vacuum, and leave the switched-off vacuum in the room where your dog relaxes.
  2. Week two: scatter treats on and around the vacuum, then switch it on at a distance while your dog stays in the room. Keep brushing with the detached head.
  3. Week three: attach the head and brush with the vacuum on in short bursts. The suction itself tends to bother dogs far less than the noise.
  4. Week four: brush with the vacuum running for a few minutes at a time, with plenty of treats.

Watch for lip licking, yawning, turning away or a tucked tail, and drop back a step whenever you see them. The aim is tolerance for grooming, not a dog who loves vacuums. For dogs with wider noise anxiety, this Thundershirt review looks at one calming option.

Dyson Dog Grooming Attachment Pros and Cons

What Works Well

  • Hair goes into the bin rather than onto floors, furniture and clothes.
  • The wide brush head gets through a big, fluffy dog quickly.
  • Self-cleaning bristles mean no picking fur out by hand.
  • It works as a normal slicker brush with the power off.

What Could Be Better

  • It only works with a compatible Dyson vacuum.
  • Holding the bristles out with your thumb gets tiring in long sessions.
  • On trigger-style vacuums, you hold the trigger and the brush at once, which ties up both hands.
  • The hose is short enough that a light stick vacuum can drag along behind you.

After a session, a quick check of your dog's skin is worth the minute it takes, and this guide to dog skin care after grooming covers what to look for.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

1

Which Dyson vacuums work with the pet grooming kit?

The Pet Grooming Kit fits most Dyson cordless stick vacuums from the V7 onward, including the V8, V10, V11, V12, V15, Outsize and Gen5 ranges. The original Groom Tool is made for Dyson's corded, plug-in vacuums. Dyson adds new models to its compatibility list over time, so always check your exact model before buying.

2

Does the Dyson pet brush work on short-haired dogs?

Not especially well. Dyson designed the brush for adult dogs with medium to long coats, where the slicker bristles have enough hair to grip. On short, smooth coats it collects far less and can feel scratchy. A rubber grooming mitt or bristle brush is usually a better, gentler choice for those breeds.

3

Can you use the Dyson pet brush with the vacuum off?

Yes. The brush works as a regular slicker brush without power, and you can switch the vacuum on only when the head is full so the suction clears it. This is the best way to start with a nervous dog, and it lets you build up to grooming with the vacuum running over several weeks.

4

Is the Dyson grooming attachment safe for puppies?

Dyson recommends the tool for adult dogs only. Puppy coats and skin are softer, and a young dog's first experiences with loud appliances shape how they feel about them later. Stick to a soft puppy brush for now, keep sessions short and happy, and introduce a vacuum grooming tool once your dog is fully grown.

5

Can you use the Dyson pet grooming kit on cats?

Dyson says it suits any pet already groomed with a slicker brush, so a relaxed, long-haired cat may tolerate it. Many cats find a running vacuum close to their body far too much, though. Brush with the power off first, and if your cat is still uneasy, use the vacuum only to clear the brush afterward.

Final Verdict on the Dyson Pet Grooming Kit

For a calm, long-coated adult dog and a household that already owns a compatible Dyson, this is one of the smartest grooming upgrades around. It turns a messy chore into a tidy one, and with patience it can win over dogs who start out wary. Before you buy, confirm your model on Dyson's Pet Grooming Kit compatibility page.

The tool is available from Dyson directly and from major retailers, including Amazon.

Ahh this is exactly what I need! I’m forever cleaning up Charlie’s hair around the house and this looks like the perfect solution! Does it actually clip the hair as well? Xx

Serena Faber Nelson11 October 2011

No – it looks similar to a clipper, but it just brushes like a slicker brush and sucks as you go. It gets into the underneath layers which means less shedding afterwards 🙂

Kimmi @ The Plastic Diaries11 October 2011

Wow this is genius! I have short hair dogs but when (yes I said when!) i get a long-haired, I am nabbing one of these!

Great job Soda!!

P.S. I guess you did an ok job too. But let’s face it. Soda did all the work 😛

Serena Faber Nelson11 October 2011

Well she DID eat all the treats which was the hardest part 😉 he he

Britt @ absolute alaia11 October 2011

oooh I’m going to have to get one of those. Luckily my dog isn’t afraid of the Dyson & I have been known to vacuum him with the hard floor attachment 😛 this will make life a little easier & seeing he sheds fur even without moving hopefully I wont have to vacuum as much as I do now!

Serena Faber Nelson11 October 2011

He’s much braver than Soda! It really is a great tool – anything that results in less cleaning is a good thing 🙂
