Dyson V11 Pet Hair Review

Woman using a Dyson V11 vacuum to clean pet hair from hardwood floors in a home with a dog.Dog Product Reviews

Ask a room full of dog moms which one thing they could not live without, and a surprising number will name their vacuum. While interviewing experts and stylish dog owners for her book Dog Mama, Pretty Fluffy founder Serena Faber-Nelson heard the same answer again and again: their Dyson. So the Dyson V11 went through a real-life pet hair test in a home with a shedding dog, on carpet, timber floors and furniture, to see whether it lives up to its reputation for pet hair.

A note on independence: Dyson loaned the V11 for testing and did not gift it, so this review was written without any product to keep. If you are also dealing with fur on clothes, couches and car seats, these pet hair remover tools pick up where a vacuum leaves off.

Is the Dyson V11 Good for Pet Hair?

Yes. The Dyson V11 is one of the most capable cordless vacuums for pet hair, pulling fur out of carpet and rugs in a pass or two and lifting dust and dander from hard floors without scattering it. Its long run time, clear LCD screen and hygienic bin make whole-home cleans realistic for dog owners. The version you buy matters, though, because newer V11 models use a hair de-tangling cleaner head and older ones do not.

Pet Hair on Carpet and Rugs

Carpet is where the V11 shines. In testing, its stiff nylon bristles dug fur out of rug pile that older stick vacuums tended to skate over, and a single slow pass cleared most of it. Independent testing backs this up: in its re-test of the model, TechRadar found the V11 superb at clearing pet hair from medium-pile carpet. On very deep pile, dropping to a lower power mode makes the cleaner head easier to push without losing much pickup.

Pet Hair on Hard Floors

On timber and tile, the soft carbon fiber filaments in the cleaner head gather fine dust and dander rather than flicking hair across the room. Tumbleweeds of fur along skirting boards disappeared easily, and the crevice tool handled the corners where shed hair collects.

Pet Hair on Sofas, Dog Beds and Stairs

The V11 converts to a handheld in one click, which makes quick work of dog beds, stairs and the arm of the sofa your pup claims as theirs. Newer V11 bundles include the Hair screw tool, a small motorized head with a cone-shaped brush bar that clears long hair from upholstery without wrapping. It is a little top-heavy in handheld mode, so longer upholstery sessions can tire the wrist. To catch fur before it ever reaches the sofa, this Dyson Groom tool review shows how a vacuum grooming attachment works on a shedding dog.

V11 Features That Matter to Dog Owners

Run Time for Whole-Home Cleans

Battery life was the biggest frustration with earlier Dyson stick vacuums, which often died before a second room was done. The V11 fixes that with up to 60 minutes of run time in its lowest power mode, enough for most apartments and many houses in one go. Boost mode drains the battery much faster, so save it for stubborn patches.

LCD Screen and Maintenance Alerts

The screen on the back of the V11 shows remaining run time to the second, the power mode you are using, and alerts for blockages and filter cleaning. For pet owners, that last part matters most, because hair is exactly what clogs a vacuum and quietly kills its suction.

Bin Size and Hygienic Emptying

A shedding dog fills any cordless bin quickly, but the V11 holds enough for a full clean of an average living area before it needs emptying. The point-and-shoot release pushes hair and dust straight into the trash, so there is no pulling clumps of fur out by hand.

Filtration for Dander and Allergies

Dyson says the V11's sealed, whole-machine filtration captures 99.99 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, which helps keep dander in the bin rather than back in the air. That makes it a sensible choice for homes where someone is allergic to dogs, alongside washing dog bedding and regular brushing with one of the best dog brushes for your pup's coat.

Which Dyson V11 Should Pet Owners Buy?

The V11 has been sold under several names since it launched, and the differences affect how it handles pet hair. Check the cleaner head and the power modes before you buy.

V11 Animal, Torque Drive and Absolute

These earlier versions, including the gold V11 Absolute Pro tested here, use the High Torque cleaner head. Its standout feature is an Auto mode that senses the floor and adjusts suction as you move from carpet to timber, which means no stopping to change heads or settings mid-clean.

V11 Origin, Extra and Dyson V11 Pet With Detangling

Most V11 models sold today use the de-tangling Motorbar cleaner head, which has vanes that clear wrapped long hair from the brush bar as you clean. That is a real advantage for owners of long-coated breeds. The trade-off is that these versions offer Eco, Medium and Boost modes rather than automatic suction adjustment, so you switch modes yourself.

V11 Fluffy and Outsize Bundles

In some markets the V11 is sold with a Fluffy soft roller head, which is excellent on hard floors but not designed for carpet. The Outsize version has a wider cleaner head and a larger bin, which suits bigger homes and heavy shedders. Compare what is in the box, since bundles and names vary by country and retailer.

V11 Pros and Cons for Pet Owners

What Works Well

  • Strong suction that clears fur from carpet and rugs quickly.
  • Up to 60 minutes of run time on the lowest setting.
  • Clear LCD screen with run time, blockage and filter alerts.
  • Hygienic point-and-shoot bin emptying.
  • Converts to a handheld for dog beds, stairs and the car.
  • Wall-mounted charging dock keeps it ready to grab.

What Could Be Better

  • Heavier than earlier Dyson sticks and a little top-heavy as a handheld.
  • Boost mode drains the battery quickly.
  • Current Motorbar versions lack automatic suction adjustment.
  • The bin still needs emptying mid-clean during heavy shedding season.
  • A premium price, even when discounted.

Which Dyson Is Best for Pet Hair?

The V11 now sits in the middle of Dyson's cordless range, and for many dog owners that is exactly the sweet spot. The lighter V8 is fine for small spaces and short-coated dogs but runs out of battery sooner. The V15 Detect adds a laser that reveals fine dust on hard floors and a sensor that counts particles, which is satisfying for anyone who wants proof the dander is gone. Dyson's newer flagships, including the Gen5detect and V16 Piston Animal, add more suction and upgraded filtration at a noticeably higher price. For most homes with one or two shedding dogs, the V11 delivers the pet hair performance that matters without paying for extras.

Upgrading From an Older Dyson

If you already own an older Dyson stick, the benefits of moving to a V11 are practical ones: roughly double the run time of many early models, a screen that tells you exactly how long you have left, and on newer versions a cleaner head that stops long dog hair wrapping around the brush bar. If you plan to add a Dyson grooming attachment, check its compatibility with your model before buying.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

1

Does the Dyson V11 get tangled with long dog hair?

It depends on the version. Newer V11 models with the de-tangling Motorbar cleaner head use vanes that clear wrapped hair from the brush bar as you vacuum, which works well for long-coated breeds. Older V11 Animal, Torque Drive and Absolute versions use the High Torque head, which can need occasional hand-clearing after a heavy shed.

2

How long does the Dyson V11 battery last?

Up to 60 minutes in the lowest power mode, according to Dyson. Real-world run time is shorter on carpet, with motorized tools, or in Boost mode, which drains the battery fastest. For most apartments and average family homes, a full charge covers a whole-house clean on the lower settings.

3

Is the Dyson V11 good for dog dander and allergies?

It helps. Dyson says the V11's sealed whole-machine filtration traps 99.99 percent of particles down to 0.3 microns, so dander stays in the bin rather than being blown back into the room. Pair it with regular brushing, washing dog bedding, and a HEPA air purifier if allergies are severe.

4

Should I buy the Dyson V11 or V15 Detect for pet hair?

Both handle pet hair very well. Choose the V11 for strong everyday performance and long run time at a lower price. Choose the V15 Detect if you want the dust-revealing laser on hard floors and a particle counter, or if you have a lot of hard flooring and like seeing exactly what you have picked up.

5

Is the Dyson V11 still worth buying?

For most dog owners, yes. It is no longer Dyson's newest cordless vacuum, but its suction, battery and pet hair performance still hold up well, and it is often discounted now that newer models sit above it. Buy a de-tangling Motorbar version if your dog has long hair, and compare bundles before you commit.
