The spread is much wider than most people expect, which is the useful thing to know before you start browsing. Quince sits at $44.90 and Dogistry at $45, then Coco Pup London at $54, Ferōz at $74, Barc London at $84, Tommy Hilfiger at $95 and Wild One at $98. The middle runs Boo'Oh at $129, MIA COOSH at $198 and 2.8 Design for Dogs at $275. Above that you are into fashion house territory: Versace at $425, Pagerie at $720 and Gucci at $900.

What the extra money buys at the top is material and construction, not a better walk. Full-grain leather, saddle stitching, solid hardware and Italian or Colombian handwork all cost real money and age beautifully. What they do not buy is a harness that fits better than a well-made $50 one, and occasionally the opposite is true, because a fashion house designs for a silhouette rather than a ribcage.

So work out which of the two you are buying. If it is the object, buy it and enjoy it. If it is daily walking gear, the bottom third of this list serves you better.

Fashion Dog Harnesses: Fit, Sizing and Safety

Fashion brand harnesses are safe for everyday walks, with caveats that matter more here than on ordinary walking gear. These are beautifully made objects designed by people thinking about proportion and finish, not always about canine shoulder movement, so the usual checks deserve more attention rather than less.

Getting the fit right

Measure your dog's chest girth just behind the front legs, standing rather than sitting, and check it against the brand's own chart instead of assuming their usual size. Once it is on, you should be able to slide two flat fingers under every strap. Any tighter restricts the shoulders, any looser and a determined dog reverses straight out of it. Stiff new leather sits differently from soft nylon, so check again after the first few wears once it has started to give.

When function should win

If your dog pulls, choose for the leash attachment first and the finish second. Only the Wild One kit offers a front no-pull ring, and the Dogistry gives you both front and back D-rings.
