Yet it wasn’t until this year we finally got to experience Victoria’s spectacular high country. And it was absolutely worth the wait.

Granite Cottage: Pet-Friendly Accommodation Beechworth

The location

Located on a quiet, semi-rural street just a short walk (3 min drive) to Beechworth town centre, Granite Cottage offers the serene setting we were hoping for, without sacrificing any conveniences (while we love our tree change escapes, there’s no denying we are city girls at heart!)  

Being so close to town means everything Beechworth has to offer, such as the bakeries, breweries, boutique stores – and beautiful heritage landmarks – are all basically on your doorstep.

Granite Cottage is also a mere 300m stroll to the popular Beechworth Gorge (you and your pup simply can’t miss these scenic walking trails that snake through Victoria’s historic goldfields).

There you can start at the Powder Magazine for a relaxing 3km walk with your pooch. Exploring the Gorge with the boys was a highlight of our trip!

About the property

When holidaying with our dogs, we always look for pet-friendly accommodation with unique or stylish features (and of course within a reasonable budget!). Because we don’t believe we should have to sacrifice on luxury or comfort simply because our dependents happen to be furry. 

And luckily for us, the owners of Granite Cottage agree. 

Just like its location, Granite Cottage offers the perfect combination of historical charm and modern comforts. 

Built in the 1860’s, it offers all the gorgeous heritage features you would want in a country holiday, particularly when visiting a gold rush-era town like Beechworth. 

Step through the front door and you’re greeted with a cosy fireplace and lounge area (one of two separate living spaces) featuring a large smart TV, complete with a huge selection of streaming platforms. 

It was the perfect setting for snuggling with the boys on the chilly evenings – we definitely made great use of this space!

Granite Cottage has an interesting split-level layout, with the two bedrooms located on the ground floor and loft. 

We took the ground floor room simply because Sunny isn’t great with running up and down stairs, so this is something to consider if your pup is a little shy of them too.

Having said that, we were very happy with our room choice as the queen bed was super cosy and comfortable, and there was plenty of space to accommodate the four of us (including both Ziggy and Sunny’s dog beds!)

The loft is one of the many unique features of the property we loved. Its quintessential loft vibes with an a-frame timber ceiling and beams, and of course the granite throughout. 

Jutting out from the loft bedroom is a cosy office space with modern provisions, such as a stand-up desk and handy reading light.

It’s a lovely retreat for relaxing with a book or catching up on emails if, like us, you’re used to working from home or on the road. 

In the afternoons this little nook catches the light beautifully, and Sunny definitely wasn’t sad about it when we plonked him down for a nap.

The kitchen and bathroom were yet another feature of the cottage offering the right blend of charm and modern amenities that make for a beautiful and stress-free stay.

In the kitchen, we certainly made use of the Breville Oracle coffee machine (and the locally produced coffee beans by micro-coffee roasters Coffee Chakra were to die for. We highly recommend picking up a bag from their Myrtleford cafe!)  

The dishwasher, large fridge/freezer and spacious layout of the kitchen made food prep for us and the boys nice and easy.

We also loved the outlook to the lush woodland-like garden, complete with outdoor seating, a bamboo bush and a lemon tree (which you’re welcome to pick from!)

The outdoor area has a covered back porch with an insulated kennel and comfy seating to relax in. As we don’t have a big yard of our own, it was a real treat letting the boys off lead to sniff and explore the garden, safe in the knowledge the property is secure and fully fenced.

Dog-friendly amenities

Speaking of pet-friendly features, what we loved most about the cottage is how truly welcoming it is to dogs.
