Which is bloomin’ delightful news for us pet parents, because it’s one of the best (and brightest!) dog-friendly places in Melbourne. And it’s here for a short time only.
We took Ziggy to Pick Your Own Sunflowers two years ago, and it was a day we’ll always remember.
Because is there anything more fun and wholesome than frolicking through a glorious field of sunflowers with your dog…?
Especially if you love finding Insta-worthy places to take photos with your pup, or you’re always on the lookout for unique dog-friendly activities in Melbourne and its surrounds.
So get ready to pack your camera, cute doggo and secateurs, because the biggest sunflower farm in Melbourne is calling!
Here’s everything you need to know.
Pick Your Own Sunflowers: Dog-Friendly Places in Melbourne
What is Pick Your Own Sunflowers?
Pick Your Own Sunflowers is a spectacular sunflower field open to the public for around 4-6 weeks, anytime between February to April (depending on when the sunflower field starts to bloom).
The opening date for Pick Your Own Sunflowers in 2023 has just been announced – see below!
Based in Dunnstown (90 minutes west of Melbourne, 15 minutes east of Ballarat) here you can wander this beautiful sunflower farm with your dog ’til your heart’s content.
There’s no time limit while you’re there, so you can leisurely pick your own sunflowers while searching out the best Insta-worthy spots to take cute photos of your dog.
How much does it cost?
Entry to the Dunnstown sunflowers field is $10.
Each sunflower stem you pick is charged at a very reasonable $4 per stem.
Cash is preferred on the day due to poor wifi signal on the farm.
When can I visit Pick Your Own Sunflowers?
The opening date for Pick Your Own Sunflowers in 2023 is Sunday 12th March, 10am – 5pm.
Due to the weather, the sunflower field was late to bloom this season (last year it ran from late February to April).
The start date usually isn’t confirmed until the last minute, as the owners always make sure the field is in full bloom before opening to the public.
It’s the same with calling an end to the season. We got very lucky the year we went, as the sunflowers stayed in bloom longer than expected so the season dates were extended.
Otherwise we would have missed out!
What to bring:
- Cash for tickets and stems
- Phone or camera
- Enclosed shoes or boots (to protect from creepy crawlies!)
- Secateurs
- Snacks or a picnic basket (limited food is available on the grounds)
- Your dog of course!
We highly recommend keeping an eye on the Pick Your Own Sunflowers website and Facebook page below for up-to-date information.
It really is a sight to be seen, and a must-do dog-friendly day trip from Melbourne.
We hope you love it as much as we did!
