'Work smart, not hard' is a mantra we always try our best to live by in this house. Because time saved, means extra cuddle time with our boys!

And when it comes to ensuring your dog has all their nutritional needs covered, this can be quite the time-consuming task (try as we might to twitch our noses genie-style, things never seem to just magically appear!)

Field Day offers a natural range of wholefood supplements and healthy dog food toppers. Whether your dog eats raw food or kibble, meal toppers are a simple, delicious extra on top of a complete diet.

Our Honest Review of Field Day Natural Dog Toppers

As busy small business owners, we can't tell you how grateful we've been for Field Day over the past couple of months.

Adding meal toppers to Ziggy's breakfast and dinner times has been one of the easiest, tastiest additions to his routine, on top of the complete diet he already eats.

And all it takes is a simple sprinkle on top of your dog's food at meal times.

Maybe we don't need that magical nose twitch after all...

What are dog food toppers?

Dog food toppers are as simple as they sound: a topping added to your dog's food!

Depending on the brand, dog food toppers can be made from a wide range of nutrient-packed ingredients such as meat, seafood, vegetables, herbs, vitamins and minerals.

Dog food toppers can either be wet, or come in a dry powdered form that is easily sprinkled on top of your dog's meal, or mixed into their food.

Benefits of dog food toppers

Natural dog food toppers can add variety and a little extra nutrition to your dog's meal.

The best quality meal toppers, such as Field Day's wholefood meal supplements, are tasty too, which can help win over fussy eaters with new enticing aromas and flavours. A dog who suddenly loses interest in food should see a vet, though, rather than simply getting a new topper.

Depending on the particular dog food topper, benefits can include:

  • Omega fats that support healthy skin and coat
  • Boosts protein intake
  • Added vitamins and nutrients
  • Fiber that helps keep digestion regular
  • Encourages fussy dogs to eat more

A topper is a nutritional extra, not a treatment. If your dog has pain, stiffness, anxiety or ongoing tummy trouble, see your vet first. Supplements are not regulated like medicines, so tell your vet about every topper and supplement your dog takes.

Let's take a look at the complete range of Field Day wholefood supplements and dog food toppers, starting with the meal topper Ziggy has been loving: Cool, Calm and Collected.

Field Day wholefood dog food topper range laid out together

Cool, Calm & Collected: Behaviour & Wellbeing Support

Field Day describes this blend as support for calm behaviour and brain health, aimed at anxious dogs and older dogs.

Key ingredients:

  • Hemp protein powder, a source of tryptophan and vitamin E
  • Salmon powder, a source of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Apple powder, which contains the antioxidant quercetin
  • St John's Wort, a herb included for its calming reputation. It can interact with some medicines, including some anxiety medications, so check with your vet before adding it if your dog takes anything else

What we loved:

As Ziggy suffers from anxiety in certain situations, we tried Cool, Calm & Collected over the past couple of months, and he's been absolutely loving it. The moment we opened the lid on his meal topper for the first time, his nose was straight up in the air. He could smell something very different, interesting and delicious was on the horizon!

Not only does it make his dinner far more tasty and exciting (hello salmon and dried apple goodness!) but in our experience Ziggy's temperament has seemed calmer during 'incidents' which usually trigger him, such as someone walking past the house, when we try to leave, or just general witching hour post-dinner. That is one dog's experience, and anxiety that affects your dog's daily life is always worth talking through with your vet.

In summary, we definitely think Ziggy's on the way to becoming a Zen master. And we now know for certain he eats better than us.

Mover & Shaker: Joint & Mobility Support

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants, this natural dog food topper is designed for active or ageing dogs. Limping or stiffness needs a vet check first, and a topper sits alongside any pain relief your vet prescribes, not instead of it.

Key ingredients:

  • Salmon powder and green-lipped mussel powder, sources of omega-3 fatty acids, the joint supplement ingredient with the strongest research behind it
  • Hemp seed powder, a source of plant protein
  • Kale powder and rosehip powder, sources of vitamins C and K
  • Egg yolk powder and turmeric. Turmeric is a popular addition to joint blends, though the evidence for it in dogs is still limited

The Balancing Act: Digestion & Gut Support

A fibre-rich wholefood meal topper designed to support your dog's gut health and regular poops. Diarrhea or vomiting that lasts more than a day needs a vet rather than a topper.

Key ingredients:

  • Inulin and psyllium husk, natural prebiotic fibres that feed beneficial gut bacteria
  • Pumpkin is rich in antioxidants, while hemp fibre is a rich source of insoluble fibre, and both help to keep digestion regular

Rise & Shine Spray: Skin & Coat Supplement

Made with 100% Australian Hemp Seed Oil, this simple spray-on meal topper adds omega fats to support a shiny coat and healthy skin!

Key ingredients:

  • Hemp seed oil contains omegas 3 & 6 for a healthy skin and shiny coat

As pet parents, we all love our dogs and want to see them live their absolute best lives. But you know what? Giving them the health and nutrition they need, doesn't need to be hard.

So if you're looking for an easy, no-fuss extra for your dog's bowl, do yourself a favour and try the Field Day range of wholefood supplements and natural dog food toppers today.
