When to Consider Meals for Mutts Salmon and Sardine?

It only takes one look into the adorable eyes of your little fluffball to win you over. Intelligent, playful, and overly energetic, your pup is the star of your household, and since you are here and reading this post, one thing is for certain: You will do anything for him, and no expense is too great, as long as it can enhance his well-being and keep him around for many years to come. But your pet ownership process doesn’t necessarily have to be overly expensive.

According to the Animal Medicines 2025 national survey of pets and people, Australia is home to no less than 31.6 million pets, and the population here spends an estimated A$21.3 billion annually looking out for their animal companions. It’s significant, but in some instances, you can decrease your yearly pet-related expenses by going for budget pet supplies.

When it comes to nutrition, you should always try to focus on top options such as Meals for Mutts Salmon and Sardine, or Taste of the Wild kibble. That said, budget accessories can be a smart choice when they don’t risk compromising your pet’s well-being. So, when purchased from local pet stores, they can be a good way to save money that you can later reinvest in the upbringing of your fluffball.

When Is It a Good Idea to Consider Budget Pet Supplies?

In my honest opinion, the key to a smooth pet ownership process is to know where you need to invest in premium products and where it’s appropriate to select certain types of budget pet supplies.

When it comes to your pup’s nutrition? Sure, you should only go for high-quality kibble, manufactured by top brands, that are focused on delivering a full-spectrum nutritional profile no matter the cost. Personally, I am a fan of Meals for Mutts Salmon and Sardine or Ziwi Peak. But for other pet ownership essentials such as dog bowls or simple toys? You could consider budgeting and go for products that will not break the bank.

Going for Budget Pet Supplies Makes Sense in These Scenarios:

1. You Are Not Fully Aware of Your Pup’s Preferences

Just like us, dogs have their own personality quirks and might exhibit preferences for certain product categories. In the first months of your pet ownership, it’s hard to know exactly which brands you should invest in, as there is no guarantee that your pup will even like the products you are going for.

Plus, chances are that you will need plenty of bowls, toys, grooming tools, and other basic accessories, all at once. Choosing an affordable option for non-essential items can be a good way to keep costs down, and then later reassess your purchases and see which other items are worth investing more in.

It’s a good idea to purchase top-quality brands such as Taste of the Wild, Ziwi Peak, or Black Hawk, as nutrition quality is quite necessary for proper physical/cognitive development. But for other items? You can be more creative.

2. Your Pet Is Destructive

Some pups are just a bit more energetic than others, and might present destructive tendencies that are incompatible with frequent purchases of high-quality supplies. Last year, for instance, I was fostering two nearly identical pups who came from the same litter. Same mother, same father, same breed, vastly different personalities.

One pup was calm, friendly, and slept most of the day. The other was the canine equivalent of Taz, from Looney Tunes. Everything he touched turned to dust, as I’ve never seen a pup so set on destroying his toys, even though, technically, they were marketed as tough.

Now, I only cared for them temporarily, but imagine this being your world for ten or more years straight. If your dog tears through toys or accessories on the daily, it makes sense to buy less expensive replacements. Or at least this is how I see it.

Is This All?

No, far from it, actually. Personally, I think going for budget pet supplies is also worth considering if you have multiple pets and so you have some issues with the supplies’ everyday wear, or/and if you are trying a product for the first time and you don’t want to commit financially, from the get-go, for an item that might not even be appropriate for your pup.

Let’s imagine this scenario. You're considering purchasing a collar for your pup, as its old harness is showing its age, and you are thinking about going for a different type of product for daily walks. Maybe in the end you decide to purchase a high-quality collar that retails for a good price. But what happens if it turns out that your dog simply cannot walk with a collar without trying to choke itself?

Maybe you tried training, positive reinforcement, pretty much the whole deal, and for nothing. In the end, you will have had to buy a new harness, and that expensive collar will probably get sold on Facebook Marketplace for not even half of what was paid for it. Before investing in an expensive item, a budget version could let you see if your pet actually likes it or is even able to properly use it.

What Are Some Pet Supplies That Can Be Purchased on a Budget?

As a general rule, you should always prioritize products that can have a positive impact on your pet’s health. Kibble such as Black Hawk Original Adult Lamb & Rice, or steamed and air-dried food made mostly from raw meat, such as Ziwi Peak Steam & Dried Lamb, might be a bit more expensive than the competition, at first glance. But long-term, they are worth it, as proper nutrition can mean fewer health issues for your pup as he gets older, and thus, less expensive vet bills.

However, some pet supplies make sense to buy on a budget. For instance, basic stainless steel or BPA-free plastic bowls can work just as well as premium versions that cost three or four times as much. Likewise, you don’t necessarily have to invest a fortune in toys if your pup is an expert in destroying them, or in everyday grooming tools, as long as they benefit from sturdy construction. Owning a pet can indeed be expensive at times. But it doesn’t always have to be.
