Dogs have been saving the day in comics, animation, and film for decades. From Superman's loyal Kryptonian companion to a scrappy Pug who licked Ryan Reynolds and became a fan favorite overnight, superhero dogs have a way of stealing the spotlight completely.

Here are the most famous super dogs from Marvel and DC — plus a quiz to find out which superhero your own dog secretly is.

The Most Famous Superhero Dogs from Comics and Film

Krypto the Superdog (DC)

Krypto is the original superhero dog and the one all others are measured against. First appearing in Adventure Comics #210 in March 1955, he is Superman's loyal white dog with the same Kryptonian powers as his owner: flight, super strength, heat vision, and senses sharper than even Superman's.

Over the decades Krypto has appeared in animated series, TV shows including Smallville and Titans, and most recently in the 2022 animated film DC League of Super-Pets voiced by Dwayne Johnson.

He was the first super-dog in the DC Universe, and his legacy has only grown since.

Ace the Bat-Hound (DC)

Even Batman has a dog, and of course his dog is serious, stealthy, and extremely capable.

Ace the Bat-Hound is Batman's trusty canine companion who matches his owner's dark and disciplined energy, with gadgets and stealth skills to match.

He was a founding member of the Legion of Super-Pets and received a heartwarming updated origin story in Detective Comics #1000 (2019) — showing his journey from a discarded, mistreated dog to a devoted, iron-willed hero. Kevin Hart voiced him in the 2022 animated film.

Lockjaw (Marvel)

Lockjaw looks like an enormous bulldog with a glowing tuning-fork antenna on his head, which tells you everything you need to know.

The telepathic protector of the Inhumans royal family debuted in 1965 courtesy of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. His primary power is teleportation, which makes him enormously useful in a crisis.

At one point Lockjaw teamed up with other Marvel Universe animals to retrieve the Infinity Gauntlet — because nobody suspects small animals, so they did it considerably faster than the Avengers.

Lucky the Pizza Dog (Marvel)

Lucky, nicknamed Pizza Dog by fans, is Hawkeye's one-eyed Golden Retriever and one of the most charming dogs in all of comics.

Clint Barton rescued him from mobsters in Matt Fraction and David Aja's beloved Hawkeye run, and Lucky quickly became a fan favorite alongside Clint and Kate Bishop.

He even headlined his own issue told entirely from his point of view — an issue that won the 2014 Eisner Award for Best Single Issue. Lucky later appeared in the 2021 Disney+ Hawkeye series, bringing him to a whole new audience.

Cosmo the Spacedog (Marvel)

Cosmo has one of the most unusual origin stories in superhero history. Originally a Soviet space program dog, he drifted off course and was mutated by cosmic rays, eventually arriving at Knowhere with powerful telepathic abilities.

He became a key extended member of the Guardians of the Galaxy universe, teaming up with cosmic powerhouses like Nova and the Silver Surfer.

Loyalty and determination, combined with psionic abilities that rival some of Marvel's top-tier characters — not bad for a good boy from Earth.

Dogpool (Marvel)

The newest entry on this list and already one of the most beloved. Dogpool is the canine counterpart to Deadpool: a Pug with the same regenerative healing factor as his owner.

The moment that Pugese pup licked Ryan Reynolds' face in Deadpool & Wolverine, Dogpool became an instant fan favorite. Since the film's release the four-legged star has been touring comic cons worldwide, stealing more attention than most human celebrities.

The DC League of Super-Pets

The 2022 animated film brought the world of superhero dogs to a new generation of fans. The story follows Krypto the Superdog, who teams up with a shelter dog named Ace and other animals to rescue several captured superheroes from Lex Luthor.

Dwayne Johnson voiced Krypto, Kevin Hart voiced Ace the Bat-Hound, and the shelter animals eventually become the pets of the wider Justice League. It is a genuinely fun film for dog lovers of all ages and a great introduction to the world of superhero pets.

What Makes a Dog a Superhero?

Ask any dog owner and they will tell you: their dog already is a superhero. The loyalty, the instinct to protect, the ability to sense when something is wrong before anyone else does. Real dogs might not be able to fly or teleport, but they have their own version of superpowers every day. The comics understand this, which is why superhero dogs resonate so deeply. They take something we already believe about our dogs and give it a cape.
