Cake on the beach? Count me in, every time. Throw in a squeaky toy as a present on top of all of that and you will also have yourself one happy Shih-Tzu! This dog birthday cake recipe was such a simple but very special way for the three of us to celebrate the little one who makes our lives fun and full of laughs, and I am happy to share some snippets of our evening with you.

The weather was perfect and the rosy sunset was simply icing on the cake. Speaking of cake, how about this Mini Berry-Almond Cake… totally cute, right?
Since Coco is also known in our house as “The Strawberry Stalker”, I knew I had to create some sort of strawberry cake. Seriously, if she sees you with strawberries, she will follow you and stare you down as if she firmly believes that 20% of the bowl has her name on it.
Needless to say Coco was quite smitten with the cake! And would you believe it’s not only made with love but also with healthy, protein packed ingredients, and is also ‘people-friendly’. Luckily, Coco is the sharing kind and let Tanner and I steal a few scrumptious bites!
She immediately fell in love with the yogurt almond ‘icing’, well that was until she saw her birthday presents: a couple of plush squeaky toys. They stole the show, and she joyfully squeaked them… a lot… and all the way home. I loved seeing how happy everything made her that night, she deserved it!
It was like she had her own little paparazzi, between myself and the people walking by on their way to the jetty pier, stealing iPhone shots as they walked past and wishing her a happy birthday. I guess that’s something they’re not used to seeing on the beach!
Dog Birthday Cake Recipe: Mini Berry-Almond Cake
THE CAKE:
1 3/4 cup almond flour
1 – 2 TBS honey (preferably raw)
3 eggs
2-3 TBS of coconut oil, melted
1 hand full chopped organic strawberries and a couple of extra for topping (blueberries work too!)
THE ICING:
1 cup of organic plain yogurt (choose one with low sugar content)
2-3 TBS of almond butter or natural peanut butter
Preheat your oven to 350F. Use coconut oil to grease two ramekin dishes (depending on the size of your dishes you may have enough batter for 3 layers). Mix your cake ingredients in the blender until smooth and fold in the berries. Pour batter into the prepared ramekin dishes, about 3/4 of the way full. Bake for 15- 20 minutes. Let cool.
While your mini cakes are cooling, mix together your yogurt and nut butter until smooth. Once cool, spread the icing onto the tops of each layer and stack. Garnish with berries of your choice, and the cake is ready to eat!
Thank you so much for all of the lovely birthday wishes to Coco Bean. She definitely felt loved and extra special! I hope you try this yummy recipe and share a healthy snack time with your pretty fluffy at home. Enjoy!

Beautiful birthday memories for everyone! Beautiful photos!
Beautiful birthday memories. Love you guys!
Mom
Haha you’re too cute – thanks, Mom!
The cake (minus the icing)is allergy-friendly for Addie! Thank you for sharing. You should be glad that Coco only thinks 20% of the strawberries should be for her because Add is a strong believer in the 50/50 split.
Thanks, Taylor!! That is too funny. They are so confident aren’t they? Gotta love them!
For the icing, you might try a yogurt that has a coconut or almond-milk base! They usually have them at health food shops 🙂
what a fabulous post and such a gorgeous little doggy. hope she had a great birthday
I don’t know what’s prettier – Coco or the cake! OK – that last shot lets Coco win by a furry nose! xx
This is too adorable! I have two little poodle cross rescue dogs that are pretty good at the stare down too! I adopted them when they were 3 years old but I don’t have an official birth date for them but I give them a big bone and a run in the park each year in late October. Now I’m inspired to try this cake as I’ve been adding coconut oil to their diet anyway so this would fit in well. Thanks for the recipe!
Just wondering something, I’ve read that almonds aren’t great for dogs’ digestive systems. Was your doggy ok eating this. Really want to make this for my dog.
I’ve never heard of that before, but I would assume they mean whole or chopped almonds, as those probably don’t break down as easily in their stomach. Almond flour, on the other hand, is ground and might be easier for their tummies 🙂
Hi Hayley, Feeding your dog lots of almonds as snacks is not advised as it can upset delicate tummies, but using almond flour is perfectly ok.
I would always start by feeding your pup a little of anything new and seeing if she has any poor reactions, then giving more 🙂
Hello,
I was just wondering if it is safe to use almond meal for this recipe? I know there is a difference between almond meal and almond flour. I was just wondering if they were both safe?
When I mixed this up it was crumbly not liquid and pourable. I did it in a bowl with a mixer instead of a blender. Could this be the cause?
