Did you know that homemade chicken jerky for dogs is one of the easiest – and tastiest – dog treat recipes you could possibly make?

Here’s why: this recipe calls for literally ONE ingredient. Yes, just one!

How many dog treat recipes do you know that have one ingredient only? (aside from our popular Oven-Baked Homemade Liver Dog Treats – perfect if your dog prefers beef over chicken!)

Sure, you could go ahead and get chicken jerky dog treats from your local store. But when this recipe is sooo easy to make, and after previous safety warnings over particular brands of store bought chicken jerky – there’s no reason not to whip up a batch yourself.

So, if your pup lives to hear you say “Chimken!”, then go ahead and make their day with this delicious chicken jerky dog treats recipe.

P.S. This oven-baked chicken jerky for dogs is the all-time favourite recipe of gorgeous Baloo the Newfypoo, who featured in our Pet Friendly Home Tour with his owner, Annika Mieling – the author of this quick and clever recipe!

Is chicken jerky good for dogs?

Chicken jerky is an excellent (and tasty!) way to provide your dog with the protein they need to thrive. But, it’s still important to remember that like any dog treat, chicken jerky should be fed to your dog in moderation, as part of a balanced diet.

Benefits of chicken jerky for dogs:

  • Chicken meat is a great source of protein
  • Single-ingredient chicken jerky is lean for dogs, making it a healthy dog treat particularly for dogs on a diet
  • Chicken is high in essential B3 and B6 vitamins, which lower cholesterol and promote healthy growth and cognitive function
  • Chicken jerky is tough and chewy, therefore helping to remove plaque and tartar
  • As homemade chicken jerky is made entirely of meat, it’s the perfect snack for dogs on a raw food diet!

How to Make Chicken Jerky For Dogs:

INGREDIENTS:

Free range chicken breast (One is more than enough!)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Slice the fresh chicken breast in very thin strips (the thinner the better).

2. Cover a baking sheet with baking paper, then place the chicken strips on it. Put them into a cold oven and heat to 300 Grad F (150 C). Cook for 1 hour.

3. Reduce the temperature to 210F (100C) and crack the oven door open to allow the moisture to escape. Leave the chicken strips in the oven for another 1.5 – 2 hours, then remove.

4. Allow the chicken strips to dry overnight at room temperature.

5. Store the chicken strips in a zip lock bag or similar, and serve as required!

  2. Sarah says:

Do you leave the oven on with the door cracked at 210F ?

  3. Oh my goodness, Baloo is so adorable!! I just want to give him a big cuddle and take him for a run on the beach! Although I think my Max might be a little put out!!!

These chicken strips are such a cool idea, a bit different from biscuit treats. I can’t wait to try them! Well try cooking them….I’ll leave the testing to Max!

I have started a food sharing site (photo sharing site) specifically for pet treats, as I have found that some of the larger sharing sites don’t always accept recipes for our fur babies.

I hope you will pop over and have look, I would love to have you submit your recipes.

I make these in a food dehydrator. They’re cut so thin that they get completely cooked/dried just fine. Most have a setting of 350. I put them in for an hour at 300 then turn it down to 200 for another hour. The air movement really helps dry them out and it used a lot less energy than running the whole oven. If you want to make a big batch, they’ll last about 4 months in the freezer.
